Terms of Use
Last updated 8 October 2026
These terms cover Phanor, the program you run and the hosted gateway it talks to. By creating an account or running Phanor against that gateway, you agree to them. If you do not, please do not use the service.
The clause we would most like you to read is the one about accuracy. Phanor writes with language models, and what it writes has to be read by a person before anyone else sees it.
1. What Phanor is
Phanor runs a newsroom. It watches sources for stories, judges which are worth covering, gathers and checks what they rest on, writes them in a voice you define, draws a cover picture, and files the result to a site you control.
The program itself runs on your own machine. The hosted gateway at phanorai.com carries the parts that need our accounts rather than yours: the model calls, the picture generation, web search and embeddings. You do not bring API keys, and we do not ask you to hold accounts with model providers.
2. Your account
Accounts are created by signing in with GitHub. We take your name, email address and avatar from GitHub and nothing else. You are responsible for what happens under your account and for the machines you sign in from.
Each installation holds an API key issued to your account. Treat that key as a password. You can revoke any key from the dashboard, and you should do so as soon as a machine leaves your control.
3. Plans, credits and billing
Everything Phanor does is metered in credits. A model call, a picture and a web search each spend them, and every request records what it cost so you can check the total against your own week.
You can subscribe to a plan, billed monthly or yearly, or buy credits outright without a subscription. Plan credits arrive at the start of each cycle and expire at the end of it. Credits you buy outright do not expire. A plan is the cheaper rate per credit, which is why buying outright costs a little more.
Payments are handled by Polar, which is the merchant of record for every sale. Polar takes the payment, collects any tax your country adds, and provides the portal where you change or cancel a plan. We never see or store your card details. Listed prices are before tax.
4. Refunds
Ask us and we will consider it. Where a refund is issued, it ends the credits that order granted, including where only part of the payment is returned. Credits already spent cannot be returned to you, because the work they paid for has already been done by the model providers we pay in turn.
Cancelling a subscription stops the next payment. It does not refund the cycle you are in, and the credits for that cycle remain yours until it ends.
5. What Phanor writes, and who owns it
The articles, pictures and other work Phanor produces for you are yours. We claim no ownership of them and no licence to publish them. The editorial files that define your voice are yours too; you keep them in your own repository.
You are responsible for what you publish. That includes checking that you have the right to use the sources a story rests on, and that what goes out meets whatever rules apply to you, whether those are legal, regulatory or the standards of your own publication.
6. Accuracy, and reading before you publish
Phanor writes using language models. Models get things wrong. They can misread a source, state a figure that is not in it, attribute a quotation to the wrong person, or write something that reads perfectly and is false.
Phanor is built to make that easier to catch. Claims are checked against what was actually opened, articles carry their provenance, and nothing is filed without leaving a trail you can follow. None of that is the same as being right.
A person must read what Phanor writes before it is published. We provide the service on the basis that you do this. We are not responsible for what is published without it, and nothing in the product should be read as a promise that its output is accurate, complete or fit to publish unreviewed.
7. Acceptable use
Do not use Phanor to produce or publish material that is unlawful, that impersonates a real person or publication, or that is designed to deceive people about who wrote it or where it came from.
Do not try to break the gateway or get around its limits: no sharing one account across separate businesses, no reselling raw model access, no automated attempts to exhaust the service for others. We may set reasonable limits on request rates to keep the service working for everyone.
8. Suspension
We may suspend an account that breaks these terms, that has not paid, or that is placing the service at risk. Where the reason allows it, we will tell you first and give you a chance to put it right. Suspension stops new work; it does not delete what you have already published or the files you keep on your own machine.
9. No warranty
The service is provided as it is. We do not warrant that it will be uninterrupted, that the models we route to will always be available, or that any particular piece of output will be accurate or suitable for your purpose. Upstream providers change their models and their prices, and we may change which model sits behind a given effort level.
10. Limits on liability
To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, for lost revenue or lost reputation, or for anything published without human review. Where we are liable, that liability is limited to what you paid us in the twelve months before the claim arose.
Nothing here limits liability that cannot lawfully be limited.
11. Changes to these terms
We may change these terms as the product changes. The date at the top says when they were last revised. Where a change materially affects what you are paying for, we will tell account holders rather than relying on you to notice.
12. How to reach us
Every account can reach us from the account dashboard, which is the surest way to be answered about your own subscription, since we can see the account you are writing about.
